Chapter 12

“Okay, so when he gets here, don’t mention anything about us having dated before.” I moved Whiskers from the small couch we had in the living room to her bed in the corner. She was not happy about being moved until I laid her toy in the bed with her, and then she still gave me the stink eye but stayed where I’d put her.

“Really?” Maribel scoffed. “We’ve met at the station a few times. Now that I know who he is, how am I not supposed to mention the connection? And while we’re on the subject, why didn’t I know about him in the first place? I thought we shared all our secrets.”

Oh man, I did not have time for a pouty Maribel. With how fast Marco put out pizza from his brick oven of yumminess, Felix could be here any minute. I needed her on board with not talking about dating and not giving me lip that I hadn’t told her. “Can we talk about this later? I just wasn’t ready to talk about it and then it was over, so it wasn’t a big deal.” I fixed the pillow on the oversized chair for the fifth time, and she put her hands over mine.

“I’m not going to chase you for this one right now. But just know that there will be talking, even if it has to involve wine. And that talking will be about why I never heard about this one, and how he seems to be making you nervous just because he’s coming over with pizza.”

I gave her a quick hug in appreciation, then promised we’d talk later just as the doorbell rang.

Patting myself down, I checked to make sure everything was where it was supposed to be and then ran my tongue over my teeth. I should not be this nervous but I was, so I just made peace with it and moved on.

When I took too long answering the door, Maribel rolled her eyes and opened it herself.

“Come on in, and please tell me that’s pepperoni.” She laughed so easily. I wished I could do the same.

Instead, Felix felt bigger in the house than he had outside it. I was going to have to get over this issue until we found my brother. I’d just have to let Felix help like he said he would. I was not some teenager in junior high hoping to get asked for the last dance, for goodness’ sake!

I grabbed napkins from the breakfast counter Maribel and I had set up instead of a dining table and brought them into the living room. In the meantime, Felix had opened up our two TV trays and then sat on the floor to eat at the coffee table.

I barely stopped myself from making him use a tray. He could eat wherever he wanted, and we had important things to do, not play musical eating spots.

He’d even thought to bring paper plates and napkins and handed them out, making my napkins from the breakfast counter unneeded.
